While I have the heart and soul of a man in my 20s (and my friend, Heidi Strandt Andrews tells me I have the mind of a brilliant 12 year old), the PHYSICAL reality is Im significantly into middle age, at a time when people start worrying that their memory is not what it once was... ...and upon such background hangs a tale... Long time readers of my ramblings may recall that I once did the New Orleans Ghost Tour (and spoke highly of it, primarily as to its descriptions of the history and architecture of NOLA). With a visitor in town this week, I took them to the Ghost Tour. I will note here for the record that: Both versions of the tour were entertaining, but the experience and stories vary greatly from one Guide to the Next. The first guide wove a more mysterious tapestry, and was an exquisite storyteller, in part because he was not overly constrained by the facts. This latest Guide, also very entertaining in her own way, made the tour significantly shorter, and somewhat less spooky, by being more driven by the historical record, and far less willing to build a narrative around things that were not recorded and cant be known.... ...all of which is only deep background to this post. In describing one of the historical events which contributed to the NOLA myth of vampirism, the guide mentioned the location of a neck wound on the presumptive vampire victims and used a common medical/anatomical term, one that most high school students would recognize, and I drew a complete blank on what the term meant. My mind kept revisiting the term for several hours, before it found the path to what the word was. Ill be checking myself into an assisted living center for senile seniors soon, just wanted to let you know why! ;-)
