While I thought point of the ice bucket was oblivious, throwing - TopicsExpress

While I thought point of the ice bucket was oblivious, throwing ice over your head instead of donating seems to be getting a lot of hate. Heres a copy of a reply I made earlier: In marketing, its called a viral coefficient. Lets say for every three people are nominated, two people dump ice water on their head for and one person donates $100. While this sounds bad on paper, in reality its a great ratio. The reason for this is user acquisition. Even though the income would be $33 per user on average, what really matters is the nominations. See, if one person pulls in two more ice buckets from the people he nominated, thats a total of six new nominations created. Then things start looping back. The result of that would be $33 per user * 9 (3 original + 6 nominated) = $297, with the important part that those 6 can produce 36 more people themselves (for another $1,188 totaling $1,485). The loop keeps building. At that point its about market cap - or in this case, the amount of people who are willing to donate and just need a kick in the behind to do it. This is why one basketball player from Boston was able to add another digit (to the tune of over $10 million) to the charity of his choice by making a simple video, asking for a $100 donation, and having a stellar viral coefficient.
