While I understand I will undoubtedly upset many people who disagree with me, I want to address something weighing heavily on my heart. We have all heard of the young woman who plans on legally ending her life next Saturday, and many of you applaud her bravery and courage. Yes, I agree it is her choice to die with dignity as she has stated. But is it truly heroic? Personally, I feel she is teaching the (sadly) large portion of our population that is bedridden or very ill that its ok to give up when enough is enough. Oh, Ive been there! Along with Lupus SLE & CNS (which affects my central nervous system, causing severe tremors), I also have early dementia, which causes me to forget even the simplest of things. Ive endured debilitating head pain, Status Migranosis (a rare migraine that NEVER ceases) that after four solid years, the doctors and specialists have deemed untreatable. Ive definitely learned a thing or two about dignity. I know firsthand what it is like to wake up (provided Ive been able to sleep) in horrific pain, not knowing where I was or how I got there, what day of the week it is, what month, etc. I know about needing assistance to and from the bathroom, in and out of the shower, as well as needing help washing my hair, drying myself, and getting dressed/undressed. I understand the side effects of medication causing extreme swelling and weight gain (125lbs), as well as the need for additional medications to counteract the original medicine. I would love to explore the world and go on great adventures during my life. But LIFE is my great adventure, whether Im bedridden or not. I get it, and without a doubt understand pain. I understand not wanting to be a burden. I understand being scared of whats to come and how bad things are going to get. I understand things might not get better. I also know firsthand that there are some beautiful lessons to be learned during those dark moments. Maybe I dont understand being terminal because i believe we are ALL terminal, from the moment we are born. Each and every one of us will die. Some of us will go quickly, others will suffer. In my eyes, a hero is a fighter that never gives up and continues their fight to the end. So yes, it is her choice to do what she is doing. And its my choice to live.
