While I was on the Trenton (LPD-14), I had a sticky servo in a SPA-4F radar repeater in CIC. It was centerline of the compartment, but we called it the Starboard SPA-4. It would stick, I would go in and hit it with my hand and it would take off. It would only stick occasionally and didn’t warrant replacing. Now for some clarification, the synchro – servo arrangement was used to show the radar antennas alignment on the radar repeater. The transmitter was in the antenna base (which in this case was the SPS-10F antenna), the receiver was in the repeater. Wherever the cursor was pointed, that was the direction the antenna was pointed. So all radar targets were in relation to the ship. On this particular occasion we had a new OSSN at this particular repeater when the call came into the ET shop the sweep was stuck. So I went on down the passageway intending to have some fun. I walked into CIC and then proceeded to lay my hands upon the face of the unit. I then looked up to the overhead, raised my hands and commenced chanting some gibberish. I would then lay my hands back upon the face and repeated the process. I did this about three times. On the third time, I brought my hands down hard against the sides of the cabinet and yelled “HEAL”. At this juncture, the sweep started going around and the new OS was just amazed. Everybody else was rolling with laughter as they knew what I had done.
