While I was waiting for the new year the subject of past FD - TopicsExpress

While I was waiting for the new year the subject of past FD meeting minutes came up. It made me think of the Madison Anson Fireman Field day in 1974. I was up there in ’74 when Starks FD won the trophies at the Madison-Anson wet down. First was ladder run. Had to carry a one fly ladder 50’ (I think) put it up against the football goal posts and one man had to climb to the top rung while the whole thing was being timed. Bill Pressey, Bill Quimby, Tom Rackliff and I carried the ladder and my Dad climbed it. He was half way up by the time it hit the goal post. We won that one. Next was the dry hose run where the first hose is laid on the ground from the hydrant to another hose which then stretches to a nozzle. One man runs to the hydrant and connects the hose tight, two men run to the end of the first hose and tighten it to the second hose, a fourth man runs to the nozzle and connects it to the second hose. Then all four run to the finish line for time. We won that one also. Third was the same as the second except you had to flow water thru the nozzle and knock down a target. We came in tied with that one and had to run it again. We won on the second attempt. Then hoses are connected to a pumper under equal pressure and two teams try to fight each other back over the end line, similar to tug of war but in reverse, using the water pressure to defeat the other team. We LOST. Still came home with three first place trophies plus we won the door prize, a bottle of whisky, which you have seen a picture of with my Dad holding it and me, Bill Pressey and Tom Rackliff gathered around. Bill Quimby had left early and missed the picture. As a side not, we took the trophies to the general store where they could be seen by the residents. That is the last I know of them. There was a rumor that they were taken to the little store in the Corn Shop but I don’t know. I took two rolls of pictures of the events and turned them in for processing and would you believe I got back two rolls of a wedding trip to Hawaii. This is my recollection and can be modified by others who have a better memory than I. Hope it wasnt too boring. Happy New Year.
