While I will definitely be writing up a complete recap of my GenCon this year, I just want to take a moment to say something that has been really bothering me since Thursday afternoon, when I took a stroll out and about in the convention hall in my Galactus costume. For those who didnt see it, a picture was featured on the Gen Con Facebook feed of me in costume. The majority of folks that chose to comment on it or share it on their own pages were really cool about it. Even a lot of the critical comments were at very least cosplay-centric, and I truly believe that people are entitled to their opinions about character stuff. Not everyone is a fan of gender bending and I get that. Thats fine. What I dont get is why there are nerdlings out there that feel it necessary to shame women in cosplay. Im at GenCon. These are supposed to be my people. I know Im a plus size girl, I look at myself in the mirror everyday. Making cruel jokes about my weight isnt cool. Calling me disgusting or speculating that Im so ugly that I must be a man is unnecessary. And trust me, your witty jab about how I should lay off the planets and switch to asteroids because they have less calories is still a shitty thing to say. Creative, but shitty. People that cosplay do it because they love the characters they dress up as. Its a celebration, just like for most of us in burlesque, the act of striptease is more than just shedding our clothes onstage. The opinions of a handful of jackasses on the internet certainly wont stop me from doing what I enjoy, but it makes me sad to think that it would stop another woman from dressing up in cosplay and expressing herself and her nerdery. And that? Thats not okay. Not even a little bit. Nerds - youre better than that. And I will not let you forget it.
