While Robin Williams death is tragic, I hope that it will bring some real awareness to the seriousness of depression. Approximately 1 million people a year commit suicide that is 1 person every 40 seconds. Lets not forget about all the other people that have lost the battle with this terrible disease. When we lost my sister, my best friend to depression I remember being told Depression is like cancer it slowly eats away at you until you can not fight it any more. My sister described it as its like being trapped under a blanket of darkness that is smothering you and you cant escape it Both of these describe depression very well. Unfortunately depression is not something that can just be willed away, it like every other disease needs treatment, medicine and maintenance to keep it under control. If you think a person is struggling with depression reach out them, get them help. If it is a family learn the signs and symptoms of depression dont be afraid to ask for help. There are resources out there to help.
