While a couple of days ago I was willing to give Putin the benefit of the doubt about his statement that the separatist referendum should be postponed and everybody calm down, I no longer am. They performed a calculated analysis in the Kremlin and said what are the people accusing us of the loudest? and concluded that it was the allegation that Russia in some way controls the pro-Russia separatists in Ukraine. So they decided to show the world that they do not by Putin saying something publicly for everyone to hear while not doing anything in terms of real control of the situation to either get armed people occupying buildings back to their living rooms or to support the country preparing for May 25th elections (which would include the afore-mentioned disbandment of ... bands that are on the barricades). It is pretty much a political See Ma - no hands! on the part of Putin and blatantly so as there is no way any of the leaders in Slovyansk or Donetsk openly disregard him without a behind a scenes wink and a nod that it is OK to just keep going and Boss has to say what he has to say for international consumption. See, in Krim he had to say Green Men were not Russian until it was OK to say they were, so, not to worry, it will all be fine.
