While breast cancer is a really terrible, heartbreaking disease can we all stop pretending we need to raise awareness for it? What we need to raise is funds for research and treatment, but lets raise awareness for mental illnesses, addiction, the diseases people refuse to talk about. Ive never heard anyone tell a cancer patient you just need to get over it! or I think youre just being a little bit over-dramatic, its probably a cold but holey shit do those comments happen for people with mental illness and it kills people. Lets have the uncomfortable conversations, lets make people google mental illnesses because they dont know what it is, and increase knowledge and understanding. That way people like LWren Scott, Charlotte Dawson, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and countless other high-profile and everyday people wont die because the stigma around it stopped them from getting help they needed. Its not a competition between diseases, but when I have to get a mental health check up as often as I do a mammogram, maybe I wont be so frustrated and annoyed. Rant over.
