While campaigning and discussing concerns with parents and voters in District 3, I have been asked my opinion on Common Core. So there is no misunderstanding, I submit the following. I do not support Common Core! As an Occupational Therapist, I even question if, developmentally, younger children can grasp the higher order thinking patterns Common Core attempts to address. While I certainly support high standards for our educational system, I have major concerns with Common Core implementation. Many of you struggle each night, just like I do with my son who has difficulty with homework and failing math grades. Our School Board, virtually every day, hears from parents who are concerned and frustrated about their childrens struggles with Common Core lessons, and how the issue is having a negative impact on the childrens desire to continue in school. Currently, there isnt enough factual data available to confirm if Common Core Standards are working. My personal conversations with parents, along with recent media reports, leads me to believe the Common Core Standards may well be creating a negative impact on our childrens learning experience. Based on my experience as an active and involved member of the Bossier Parish School Board, I can assure you that, in areas where there was room for discretion, we sought to ensure local concerns were afforded attention. Today, however, Common Core Standards are the law in Louisiana and are mandated by our legislature and BESE. My promise,as your school board member and the mother of two students in Benton Schools, is to do everything possible to stay well informed about the issue and seek out alternative procedures as permitted within the existing laws. That includes speaking to local legislators, listening to parents, discussing the issues with professional educators and teachers, and taking a stand for our children. I strongly feel educators and parents need to be what drives our educational system and with your help we can be in control of our children’s education.
