“While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off” (Matthew 13:25). In some ways, the community of Christendom is a big, jumbled mess. Beside the one who wakes up wanting to love her neighbor is the man plotting to exploit the poor. Against the truth and grace of God’s word shouts the competing voices of self-centeredness and heresy. Next to the church that seeks to be a safe haven for the bruised and battered sinner is the church behaving badly bringing ridicule to the Lord’s name. The only consolation I can give is the fact that this is exactly how Jesus said it would be. Among his harvest of wheat the enemy has sown what looks like wheat but is really something useless and ugly. Fret not, says Jesus, it will all be sorted out in the end. But there is still the wheat. There are those who seek to be the pure. There are those who seek to be genuine.
