While he was on the Mexican Border near Laredo, Texas around October 1, 1916 his Lieutenant walked pasted a cactus and it flew back and struck him on the knee. He went to the field hospital and was operated on and the place where it struck was tender and weak and when he attempted to kneel on it - it became very painful. Because of this injury he was discharged on August 24th, 1917 and returned back to Springfield, Greene, Missouri. He attempted to apply for a military pension but was denied because he did not serve enough time in the military to warrant a pension.diannhandysite/tag/american-civil-war/
