While in civilized world people may only know one form of marriage - TopicsExpress

While in civilized world people may only know one form of marriage (consensual) we being different, in our part of the world we practice marriage in its multiple forms to cater to our needs and drag it into almost any matter of the life. Common marriage: This is the widely practiced form of marriage where respective parents find the match for their offsprings. A brief meeting of guy and girl in the drawing room, in the presence of whole family is considered enough for each of them where girl could hardly look at the guy as it would be thought inappropriate let alone conduct a conversation with him. Here your like and dislike is immaterial as if parents are convinced of the suitably of match they would imply all kind of tools from threats to blackmailing to force you into it and you ll be at a loss to fight them on an equal level. Exchange marriage: When a person finds it impossible to find a girl on his own merit he uses the female family members as a tool to achieve the goal. For example two persons ll exchange their daughters or sisters to marry. Here again like and dislike of girls is immaterial and they ll be shamelessly used for the whims of their male family members. Vinni or Swara: In this kind of marriage again girls are used to settle the feuds perpetrated by their male family members. Practiced in Sawat and tribal areas girls are given in marriage to seek truce with the offended party. Mostly daughters and sisters of the criminal are made to sacrifice to save his ass. Here in the absence of older girls minor ones as young as 5 or 8 or in some cases even unborn girls are compromised. And of course it goes without saying that these helpless girls are doomed to bear the wrath of their so called in laws for the rest of their life. Marriage of convenience: When a woman dies leaving behind small kids suddenly families of the couple including guy himself start looking at the younger sister as the most appropriate match for the guy. She is badly pressurized and forced into the match and made to think that her refusal ll be equal to being callous heartless and selfish. Same thing happens with the guys when in case of brothers death they are forced to marry sister in law. No one gives a damn about the feelings of the concerned parties and again like and dislike are of no consequence. In some cases even previous engagements are called off to go ahead with this disaster management. I might be missing some other forms of marriages which I am not aware of but one thing is common among all of them that they manifest the cruel. savage, inhuman and degrading trends of our society. What is more unsettling is that everyone is cool about it and does not care to identify the compromise of life, feelings, desires, wishes and even the very safety of the girl involved. And I have no shame in rejecting all above as the violation of a very basic human right, that of freedom of choice.
