While it is apparent there are deeper traditions tied to decorating the Yule (and Christmas) Tree than just the obvious customs associated with this time of year; today I was reminded of the individual and precious traditions rooted in each family tree and I mean both ancestral and evergreen. While we bring in a new tree each Yuletide season, there is an ancient story being told in the ornaments of years past, of journeys made and of treasures held by multiple generations. The antique bird the Irish grandmother saved her pennies to buy her first Christmas in America, bought from a Boston department store...the elephant a mother gifted her daughter in 1969....a wooden snowflake made by your childs first friend...each precious ornament has a story to tell. Glass blown, handmade, painted, glittered, faded...they have passed through many loving hands and each year they gain in magick as their stories are passed down. Richer our we for these moments in which the sweetness of life is shared.
