While it is true that wage theft as they coined it is widespread, - TopicsExpress

While it is true that wage theft as they coined it is widespread, those of software engineers and front-end workers at fast food chains differ starkly on the very basics. We too need to ask why, and not simply accept without knowing what happen. Not meant to defend the unethical methods of employers from the point that they would well afford to pay higher, the other part of the truth lies on the flip side of the same coin. Problem of this nature happens on a tight demand market. What actually happens is every time an engineer resigns and joins another company, he or she gets a raise. Are we not familiar with such happening in Singapore? Demand for experienced banking staffs had somehow created runaway wages that has no basis or reference to their inherent ability. If short paying skilled workers is considered wage theft, then would you call the practice of job-hopping wage robbery? Coming to front-end workers or specifically termed low waged ones, the class action brought about was the sudden change in minimum wages that had resulted. Obama admitted that minimum wages will kill enterprise, but populist politics had its way over rational, sensible business practices and environment. Singapore goes for progressive wages. Nothing is perfect, but we will not follow what has failed in all fronts. For Singapore, do we choose to be rational or to be populist?
