While it was a mainstream hit, DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN still seemed to represent all that was smart and hip about 80s cinema...I thought it was pretty terrific entertainment. Revisiting it on Bluray almost 3 decades later it often seems sluggish, rather like a 45rpm record playing at 33; worringly, its not the only film of the period that Ive felt similar to this about, and Im now panicking in case a couple of my all-time favourites from this era of filmmaking dont work their magic on me anymore. Whereas then, director Susan Siedelmans previous work SMITHEREENS seemed more interesting in the context of DSS, today her debut stands on its own as much the better of the two films.
