While lying in bed this morning waiting for the sleep to leave my eyes, I heard a subject being discussed on radio five live which made my hackles rise. Now I don’t normally rise before ten, after often staying up until the early hours, but after hearing this particular programme I just had to get up and produce, or should I say report, what I heard.. The thing under discussion related to a view I had expressed and posted on the wall barely an hour or so before, referring to the difference in the way the Media in all its forms is prepared to give publicity to most sports, but not that of Crown Green Bowling, where their lack of interest gets even wider; but not it seems in the case of Lawn Bowls; an event featured in the Commonwealth games today n Glasgow. When therefore, Nicky Campbell discussed for some time the start of one of the first events in the games, that of Lawn Bowls, with some of the competitors, I listened with interest. He and at few notable players went on to debate some of the attributes of the game, describing how to draw, build a head, the differing size and bias in some of the bowls, which was all very interesting for one who has played the game. But I couldn’t help thinking that rarely if ever (apart from a few explanatory words from such as Harry Rigby, commentating on the Waterloo etc) have I ever heard our game discussed at such a length when, without prejudice, I know full well that ours is a more difficult, interesting and complex game. But putting aside the parochial nature of our game, which is a disadvantage, could it be that we are the arbiters of our own lack of publicity? Is it that we are lax in putting forward to the Media and the world at large world at large, the merits of our game? I would love to hear Crown Green Bowls discussed as Lawn Bowls was today, it would give our game a much needed boost; perhaps then those on the outside might begin to realise that our game is anything other than a dull and uninteresting game for old men.
