While on cab drivers, around 2008 I used to be part of a German theatre project that performed live via high-speed internet at European show times. It was fun. We had contracted cars dropping us back home, usually between 1:30 and 2:30 AM. One day, my sole companion AR took the day off. As we sped through the deserted and far-from-everything Eastern Bypass, the driver started chatting with me about the nature of our jobs. Working odd hours is just what a man has to do in these times, he said. But it was unthinkable for women to go out and work - and work such scandalous hours. In our community, he said, even in big cities like Allahabad, we would taunt the men of her family. We would say, What, male income is not enough to run your household? Whats your extra expense? Is it worth your honour? Then, if they didnt stop their womens shameful misbehaviour, all the neighbourhood men would get together, and take steps to make sure the woman reconsidered going out to work at all, much less work such odd, suggestive hours. Because really, what work could she be doing that late at night? You tell me, madam, what do your neighbours think you are really doing?
