While on my visit to WA, I had the privilege of interviewing my 90 years young Papa on his life history and his development that shaped him into the man he is today. Many pearls of wisdom were shared throughout, (and many interesting stories). I asked him about his current life cycle, and how it is different from all of the others. He said to me, and this is a direct quote, trying to improve lifestyles is my motivation. And trying to be funny and make people laugh. Life is pretty boring at times for a lot of people, you gotta make em laugh. Comedians are one of the world’s greatest assets. Its hard for people to wrap their minds around a persons choice to end their own seemingly fulfilled life. This is the same kind of inability to fathom or emphatize with the disease of addiction. When that person was the source of considerable laughter--a bright, shining and inspiring light which conquered and achieved so much, it becomes even further from the reaches of our acceptance that this person was hurting at a catastrophic level. This is no new thing, sometimes the most fulfilling of characters (John Belushi, Chris Farley, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and countless other celebritites) carry the heaviest of demons and succumb to the pain in one way or another. Maybe its because they are expected to just be happy, no matter what. If you find yourself unable to sympathize with the wretched pain of a mental health disorder such as depression, in turn just be grateful that you dont understand such empty, lonely, deep, seemingly unending torment and unhappiness. Thank you Robin Williams for the laughs, the stories you told, and the motivations you inspired. You helped make life not boring for A LOT of people. My heart goes out to his mourning family, as he is at peace now.
