While our choristers have been flying the Philharmonia flag with Andrea B and Delta G and no doubt covering themselves in glory, ABC Classic FM has been broadcasting from the Proms: Bachs St Matthew Passion with the Berlin Radio Chorus and soloists under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. (Sydney audiences are longing for Philharmonia to revisit Bachs Passions!) Tonights concert, directed by Peter Sellars, was a controversial highpoint of this years London Proms. But then, as many of us know and recall, Maestro Rattle has the Midas touch and Sellars is no stranger to controversy. The enthusiastic American director relishes creative fresh interpretations and delights in moving the chorus about the stage to height the drama. There has been much to enjoy in this broadcast. If one missed Bocelli, Bach was certainly the ideal alternative to enrich a September evening. Theres something special about indescribably beautiful music accompanied by precious waves of nostalgia.
