While serving in Latvia one year, our staff decided to play the beloved game chubby bunny. Its the safest game in the world (maybe not) where people stuff marshmallows in their mouth and say chubby bunny. The winner of this game is the person who is capable of stuffing the most marshmallows and still audibly say chubby bunny. After the winner was announced, we had 1-2 bags of marshmallows left. Each bag held 20 something marshmallows or so. We decided to throw a few amongst the crowd of nearly 100 children. A piece landed in the hands of one of the young teens I was responsible for. I was so happy for him. I was clapping and urging him to enjoy this delicacy. The boy looked around and saw the other boys sadly looking intently at him. Yeah they were happy for him but at the same time, their wishes of scoring one was long gone. I can not forget What the prized boy did next. This is engrained in my mind and in my heart. He took the ONE marshmallow and divided it among all the boys in our group. He squeezed the thing and broke a piece for all his little homies. Eventually he only enjoyed a pinch of the marshmallow. Thats what all of them got! I cant help but think of the excess in food and drink we have in this country. Ill be honest, Ive abuse that privilege. I have eaten and eaten until nearly throwing up. Not recently but in years past. Thanksgiving days were prime examples or perhaps a good all you can eat buffet. Yet, these boys were splitting a single midsize marshmallow. My God, why have I been so blind? Lord forgive me. Forgive me for being so blind to the wealth and prosperity that Ive taken advantage of while children go hungry. Please let me not stop there but help me live simpler so others would simply live. May it not be empty words but may I act according to the generous spirit you have empowered me with. In Your Sons name, amen.
