While showering one morning in 1974, Dr. Charles Garfield, a clinical psychologist working in UCSFs cancer center, had an epiphany--recruit and train ordinary people (aka-volunteers) to provide extraordinary service to better serve his patients living with terminal cancer. Following his life-changing shower, Dr. Garfield went on to train the first group of Shanti volunteers. These newly trained volunteers were able to considerably enhance the emotional well-being of the 40 patients under Dr. Garfields care. Since that day in 1974, Shanti has trained over 18,000 volunteers in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has provided approximately 15 million hours of volunteer support to our neighbors living with a life-threatening illness. On October 18, we will come together at the Fairmont Hotel to celebrate Shantis accomplishments over the past 40 years. Then on December 1, World AIDS Day, we invite anyone who has ever volunteered for Shanti, or cared for someone living with HIV/AIDS, to join us in the National AIDS Memorial Grove to share stories of service and acknowledge the gift of compassionate care. We invite you to join us! For more information, please visit shanti.org
