While the NWA World Champion only made an occasional appearance in Nor Cal during the Shire era and usually only at the Cow Palace, Lou Thesz made a whirlwind 2 week tour of the circuit during 1951. Sadly,no footage exists of Nor Cal wrestling from that time period, but below is a link for a match he had against one of his opponents from the Nor Cal tour, Tom Rice, at Hollywood Legion Stadium. Rice was had played football as USF and later became a referee in Nor Cal when his in-ring career was over. Thesz had some great opponents during the 1951 tour, but his greatest series of challenges in the area would begin a couple of years later and would come from San Francisco 49er Leo Nomellini.
