While the good Sheriff makes several valid assertions about the medical marijuana initiative, she proposes no meaningful alternative to the prohibition-model that incarcerated hundreds of people in Alachua County last year at tremendous cost to society and to the individuals. In some cases, we confiscated their property, took away their driving privileges, damaged their employability, and made them pay large fines and court costs – all while providing no meaningful drug prevention education or mental health treatment options. Our judges and prosecutors have said, We wish wed never see another marijuana case, yet once somebody has been arrested, the criminal justice system must grind away at them. At best, the Sheriffs continued focus on enforcing archaic marijuana laws is a misplaced priority that distracts her and her deputies from much more serious issues. Stop bogarting our jail space, my friend.
