While this celebratory event for Chebi Sabbah is just now coming together we know there are many people still finding out about Chebi Sabbahs passing last Wednesday, November 6th. This gathering promises to be a very special evening; one honoring a man, his music and his mission. I loved introducing him at festivals as The Godfather of World Music to which he would humbly smile. Id even tease him by pronouncing that he started DJing when the turntables were cut from stone! But really, Cheb I Sabbahs career was a long one. He outlived innumerable music trends, record labels, genres, nightclubs and even fellow musicians with whom he collaborated. However, the one constant that always remained was his fans. Blessed with an inimitable understanding of both the sounds of world music’s classical instrumentation, and the sound and tempo design of club music, Cheb I Sabbah forged and fused a highly accessible signature vibe that could commandeer the most unsuspecting of dancefloors. He played for an enthusiastic audience worldwide, and counted among his fans were royalty, celebrities and of course the global community of world music lovers! He spirited, protected, forged and fought for a place in his chosen vocation, a place that had no blueprint preceding him, no model for success, no predecessor (he was - in every way possible - a pioneer!). His career span was decades long, yet it never had a retirement plan, pension fund or health benefits to go with it. So next week’s celebration both honors Cheb I Sabbah, and assists his family with all the associated costs of his passing.
