While trimming grass yesterday, did some serious damage to a young garter snake. Having to make a decision, I put some gentle pressure on the wound and let it go. It had been writhing in pain but seemed to make enough of a recovery to move into the grass and disappear. Several options were available: try to keep it until it healed, put it out of its misery, put it in the open where a hawk would surely give it a quick ending, or just let it go. I dont think there are any snake rehabilitators in the area. Been thinking all last night and today about whether or not I did the right thing :-(
