While we are busy tapping away on our pocket devices, our Smartphone use is busy shaping our brains. Researchers investigating the impact that the finger dexterity of Smartphone users has on the brain have discovered that the day-to-day plasticity of the human brain could be researched based on our Smartphone usage. With their recordings, our phones provide a fertile source of data for this behavior, giving us an opportunity to understand how normal life shapes the brains of ordinary people, explains one of the authors, Arko Ghosh. The work focused on studying activation in the sensorimotor cortex, which is triggered by finger movements. By using EEG to measure cortical activity, the work demonstrated that the frequency of Smartphone usage influences the activity and that the correlation was strongest (proportional) in the area of the brain that represents the thumb.
