While we’re posting Civil War letters, I’d like to post this one from out of the county, but Greenberry Holcombe was the great grandfather of Towns County native, Faye Hooper Twiggs (1910-2001). The following letter was written by Greenberry Holcombe (1825-1908), son of Jesse Holcombe and Susannah Rusk , during the Civil War to his wife Ludah Narcissa Edwards (1826-1911), daughter of James Edwards and Sarah McCollum, all of the Habersham/White counties. Oct 18th 1864 Camp near Palmetto camel county Dear companion I again take the pleasure of writing to you to let you know that I am in first rate health. I am ancious to hear from you all. I have not heard from you since I left. I wrote to you from griffin the 9 of Oct and from noonan the 14. I wrote to you concerning your business most particular the tax and how to raise the tax money. I will say again that I think you had better sell them 2 heifers you ought to have two hundred and twenty five dollars but probably hey are falling away so that you had better lump them off at two hundred as it would be a bad chance to carry of the hides. I cant tell how to write to you unless I knew whether you got my other letters. you can get instruction about your tax from D. H. McCol. You must do the bes you can til I come. Lieutenant Chastain has taken me in his detail. He is going by home with me. I am now on a detail making horseshoe nails for the battalion. It is lite nice work and extry pay. I have seen many curiosities since I left. We have a fine time so far plenty to eat and but little to do. I have not stood gard but two hours since I left home. I will send this letter by hand to Athens by our cooyer page 2 you may direct your letter to G B Holcombe Co H 30th ga battalion via the way of Athens I will give it more grammatical at the bottom. If your health is still bad get you some more brandy. I will send you fifty dollars the first safe chance if I don’t get to come shortly. I sold my oil cloth for thirty five dollars. I can get five dollars for every horse that I will shoe. The boys likes my shoeing so well the most of the details shoes very rough. My light is so bad that I will close til morning. Oct 19th Sandy B I want you to do the best you can til I come. join in with somebody that has a team and gather your corn. Take good care of every thing. Get up your killing hogs as soon as possible. Get them from Cleaves. you had better fatten four. Be sure to fatten them at Cleaves if you can get them I will bring you plenty of powder and led and several other curiosity if I can carry them. Priscilla you must save me and Lieutenant Chastain two dozen good apples and a mess of mutton. Direct your letter to this via is a latten word signifying by the way of.
