Whilst i sympathise 100% with any owner that loses their dog (as i would be in bits) whether for a short period of time or worse never to come home, and I myself have responded to several lost dog appeals by walking and driving the streets searching. And whilst I realise accidents happen...gate not closed properly or dogs makes an escape out of the front when you pop out to the bin...what I am struggling with is the amount of dogs that are lost each and every day as they are let off lead in a field/park/woods. Seems to be at least one a week lost at Heartwood and some by experienced dog walkers. If you are not 100% certain on both yours and your dogs recall ability...why do you let them off lead? I know for a fact that if my dog Tilly spotted a bird or a cat not even a marching band could distract her from the chase. And as i cant guarantee no birds or cats i simply dont let her off lead in open public spaces. My question is this am I too over protective? Is it worth the risk to let any dog off lead when you dont know whats around the corner? As a person walking someone elses dog would you? Looking for healthly debate, no abuse.. and not critising anyone.
