Whilst other countries carry out checks before allowing a citizen to renounce their citizenship and hence their responsibilities, South Africa renounces citizenship automatically, no questions asked. You simply do not know about applying for the dual citizenship permission letter and you lose your citizenship automatically! Quite convenient if youre in trouble with the SA tax man or the courts? One would think that as an absolute minimum, you would need to acknowledge the loss of your citizenship and prove SARS and SA police clearance? However Dept. of Home Affairs will automatically cancel your citizenship and yet you could be a wanted criminal or have outstanding taxes with SARS. Not to mention families where fathers are paying child support to their children in SA? What recourse would there be on a non SA citizen who would now be protected by another countries laws? Just a thought but it appears that Home Affairs may not have given this any thought at all.....
