White Station soccer standout staying at home Goalie Sobral chooses Tigers By John Varlas Thursday, February 13, 2014 Four years ago, Lauren Sobral answered the White Station soccer team’s urgent call for goalkeeping help. Now, she’ll have a chance to star for the hometown school. Sobral, the Spartans’ all-metro senior, recently signed with the University of Memphis, completing a climb in which she grew from a struggling field player as a freshman to one of the state’s top goalkeeping prospects. “I actually played softball in middle school,” the 5-11 Sobral said. “(As a freshman) I tried out for soccer kind of on a whim. Towards the end of preseason practice, we still didn’t have a goalkeeper. “(Coach) Jason (Love) told us to look around school and see if we could find anyone tall, maybe a basketball player, anyone with good hands who could play. I was kind of struggling as a field player so I talked to my parents and decided to give it a try.” Sobral’s recruitment with the Tigers was a bit of a whirlwind; she said she was looking at UAB before Memphis got involved. From first contact to signing the scholarship offer took just two weeks, but Sobral knows it’s a great fit. “I’m looking forward to working with (head coach) Brooks (Monaghan) and (assistant) Jonny (Walker),” she said. “I’m continuing to grow as player; I haven’t peaked yet.” Sobral is one of several players from the Panathinaikos club team who have signed scholarships in the last several days. Others include Bolton’s Alyse Marco (Delta State), Olive Branch’s Abigail Morales (Trevecca Nazarene), Brigthon’s Hannah Whitefoot (Williams Baptist) and DeSoto Central’s Pace Boettcher (Mississippi College). In other signing news, Overton lineman Ryan Williams, a 6-1, 290-pound all-metro selection, will play at Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Brighton’s Tanner Burnett will run track and cross country at King College in Bristol, Tenn., and St. George’s gymnast Mia Bargiacchi has signed with Arkansas. State wrestling Thursday was a good day for Collierville as four Dragons advanced to the quarterfinals of the AAA state tournament in Franklin. Seth Williams advanced at 145, pinning Caleb Adkins of Bradley Central at 3:16 and defeating Alex Jeffers of Dobyns-Bennett, 7-1. Grayson Yoder moved on in the 170- pound class with a pinfall win over Tyler Sheehan of Heritage (4:52) and an 11-10 win over Macon Webster of Dickson County. At 182, Cameron Tarver pinned Brandon Kingley of Heritage at 3:41 and beat Deby Cardona of Glencliff, 6-5. Heavyweight Tres Ring pinned both of his opponents, Hunter Hancock of Summitt (1:44) and Ethan Dane of Knoxville Central (1:21). Luke Walker of Millington had a pair of pins to advance at 182. Alex Carroll of Bartlett and Andrew Zarshenas of Arlington advanced to the quarters in 113 and 132, respectively. © 2014 Scripps New spaper Group — Online
