White-browed Shortwing (Brachypteryx montana) 5-5 1/2 inches, Male. Now that I have seen this elusive bird, I can say that I prefer the colors of the Female WBSW. The challenge was there and it was fulfilling to be able to see & photograph the male. Ferruginous Flycatcher (Muscicapa ferruginea) 5 inches. The last time I saw this bird was about 4 years ago at UP Diliman. It was a rare occasion but stayed for several weeks enabling a lot of bird photographers to take his picture. At BK the bird was more relax as he did his stretching for me. LOL. Seven months ago, Ramon was telling me that he plans to build a shallow pond so that the birds of the forest will have a place to drink water readily. Soon after that, a generous man constructed a water tank, I estimate to be at least 50,000 gallons. If I have the measurement, I could give a more exact figure. The water is given free to the residents of Dolores. The pond is now operating and what we saw were swallows diving in for a drink. When the flowering plants & fruiting trees, grow and mature, it is expected that more birds will make it their home. The farmers are now raising oyster mushrooms that give them a steady income. Bird photographers also help the people earn more than a day’s wage by acting as guide/porters. Ramon has put in a lot of effort to develop BK into a potential tourist destination. He has given the people there an opportunity to supplement their income. Hopefully in the near future it would result in jobs more permanent in nature.
