Whither goes the Bhutanese economy? After one year of chaotic ruling by the PDP, the nation is left perplexed more than ever. Much noise was made by the PDP during the election campaign about the poor state of the economy left behind by the DPT. Come ruling time, the Government does not have any inkling of how to manage the economy. Let alone thinking of new ideas and strategies for taking the nation forward, it doesn’t even know how to continue with the visionary projects initiated by the past government. Projects entailing far-reaching and long-term benefits such as the Education City have been scrapped. Foreign investments are discouraged. No hydro-power projects have started, (an initiative of the past government) let alone thinking of new and effective strategies to take the nation forward. Local government budgets have been slashed so much so that one Gewog after another is crying foul. Contractors have not been paid and are starved of work, and employment has not picked up. The PDP considered Bhutan’s public debt to be very high but now they are vehemently defending their act of adding more debt of over 15% in their first year and a whopping 32% in the second financial year. It seems only interested in selling certain electric vehicles and those too of second-hand nature. It has paid lip service to the planned target economic growth rate of 7.1 % in the first year (FY 2013-14). That of the second year is 6.8 %, which, going by the way things are being handled by the government, is a non-starter. Not one new industry has come up over the last one and half years. The government has not gone anywhere beyond the rhetorics. It is only thinking of how to raise its Minister’s salaries. Where is the Government, which said that they would fix the economy? Where is the government, which said that they would not take loans? Where is the government, which said that they would carry out Wangtshad Phchhirpel to the Gewogs? How long can we afford to be under an amateurish government with a total state of confusion. God help the Bhutanese people! *********
