Whither subsidy? Rich, middle classes and comfortable sections of society seek more and more things for themselves at the cost of tax payers. There are plethora of schemes in the name of development given by Govt like tax holiday, interest subsidy, NPA settlements, subsidy on Petro and Gas largely used by these sections, but When Govt tries to help very marginal sections even in small way, they all cry in unison. Most of funds distributed in the name of poor are looted by middle and rich classes as middlemen pouch on ration, kerosene allotments, educational loans, social welfare schemes, NMGREGA, health schemes, housing for economically weaker as they know how to exploit the system. Poor people hardly know these schemes of Govt of day be it state or union. Direct transfer of benefits to the bank account and zero balance universal bank account were well conceived by Sonia Gandhi and her think tank and UPA 2 implemented these,a tad belatedly. Due to 2G and scam charges UPA 2 lost all control over Govt during 2012 and 2013 and in this situation sensing victory in 2014 polls, every party particularly BJP opposed Direct Transfer scheme and media was hell bent on criticisng even if MMS breathed. Consequently, the well meaning schemes were hardly known to poor. Thankfully, after assuming power BJP repainted these schemes and AADHAR as if it was their own. It hardly matters but hope that middlemen are avoided and marginal sections can get in to mainstream.
