Who, What, Where, When? | This Saturday is International Gaucher Awareness Day. The date would have been the 160th birthday of Dr. Philippe Gaucher who first described the disease in 1882. Gaucher is a genetically inherited disorder, patients produce insufficient quantities of a specific enzyme causing fatty waste to buildup in cells and interfere with organ functions. This year marks 20 years since the introduction of Cerezyme the first recombinant enzyme replacement therapy for the disease.
