Who are the Beatles? On February 9, 1964, they appeared on the Ed Sullivan show to a packed audience. 50,000 people requested tickets, but there were only 703 seats available and only a portion of these were given to Beatles fans. Approximately 73 million viewers tuned in, breaking previous records for US television. Remember, this was 1964 and the population of the U.S.A. was only 192 million, so almost half the people in the United State tuned in.
