Who are the Jama’at at-Tableegh? Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdillah al-Imaam Q: I request a gratifying response regarding Jama’at at-Tableegh. Who are they, what are they aiming for, and what is the basis of their da’wah? A: The foundation of the call of the Jama’at at- Tableegh is ignorance of Islamic Shari’ah. Our Shaykh, al-Aa’laama al-Waad’ee (Shaykh Muqbil bin Haadee al Waad’ee) may Allah have mercy on him even said: ‘Jama’at at-Tableegh are in need of tableegh’ (i.e. to learn the Islamic message). They encourage people to call to Allah, while they abstain from seeking knowledge of Shari’ah. And no doubt, knowledge of Shari’ah is a foundation for calling to Allah. Whoever is not equipped with the knowledge of the Shariah will teach people with an empty vessel. He will teach people violations of the religion supported by weak and fabricated Hadiths, leading them to traps of Bid’ah or maybe Shirk. Al -Aa’laama al-Albaani (rahimahullah) said: ‘The innovated da’wah of the Tableegh is modern-day Sufism,’ meaning, they have turned Sufism into something compatible with this era. We do not deny that some who join Jama’at at- Tableegh are from the people of Tawheed. However, those individuals are not fully cognizant of what the people of this da’wah are upon, and some of them join the ranks disguised under the claim of reformation. At any rate, the call of Jam’at at-Tableegh promotes ignorance, because they don’t concern themselves with the affair of legislated knowledge, in fact, they flee from it. Additionally, when they find one devoting himself to the knowledge of Shariah, they attempt to distance him away from it and urge him to join them in their departure for 30 and up to 40 days, as far as 4 moths, and so forth. They have no concern for affairs of knowledge, so who will clarify the religion of Islam to the people and refute the people of falsehood if knowledge is abandoned? They might say ‘this is our path and others have their own,’ but the response to that is they are not blessed to possess the magnificent fortune of knowledge in order to call to Allah upon clarity. Within their call exists that which opposes Islamic Shari’ah, so we don’t advise anyone to join them or go out with them due to what their da’wah contains of innovations and opposing the Sunnah.
