Who are we in the craft? The hairdresser community is much larger than the few ARTISTS that headline our trade magazine or the trade show’s stages. During my 43 years in the craft, I’ve met some of my early years “STARS”, that were portrayed by national beauty trade magazine as the cats Miao, getting to know them during the course of the years, Ive found out, that we’re all humans, our professional lives and living in general, is not the pretty picture we see described in our trade magazines, were all made of faults, as well as accomplishments, especially when described by a reporters, which have never laid hands on a head of hair. Here are some of the results of my long-term research about how we are divide in our approach and philosophy within our work: 50% of all of hairdressers are in it for the money. 20% are caught up in interpersonal relationship with their client (spiritual gurus, generate gossip and drama, religion, sports, sales of items not associated with a salon… such as real estate, cars, appliances…) 5% are in it to fulfill their creative ability ( making learning an everyday mission which fuels their passion, and unconditional approach to gaining inner wisdom through their work…) 5% use it as a stepping stone to something else ( such as, focusing on becoming a nurse, for instance, or continue University studies…) 5% teach at the beauty school level, ( they’re everyday challenge, is to see a student progress, see young women and men grow in the learning the rudiment of the craft…) 5% of the shop owners, are also dedicated teachers, mentors, sometimes babysitters, and, or mother to their staff. 5% are on a relentless quest to do it better each time the client sits in their styling chair, for their own selfish reward. The client becomes a byproduct of your creative process and trust you to the fullest with each innovation you project, growing as you do while they are on the receiving end of artistic growth. SV
