Who are you as a dog-trainer, or dog-owner? This used to be defined in terms of click or correct, but those are just tools in the tool-box. What defines us is our mind-set, and our relationships with our dogs. Part of your relationship is defined by your beliefs of your dog. How do you feel about your dog? Please don’t use a broad emotion, such as “I love him”. How do you really feel? Is he able to push your buttons? Does he do little things that make you want to throttle him? These are the emotions that your dog feels every single time that you pick up that leash. Your beliefs about who your dog is will be told to him every single time you look into his eyes, kiss his little ears, and or engage with him. Right now I am struggling with a dog, as probably are most of you. The part that I get stuck in, as probably do most of you, is my thoughts before will predetermine my outcome. I can get stuck in This is hard work or He is so challenging. Really, we must all be grateful that we get to have dogs, that we have homes, and food on our tables. These are first-world problems that we are blessed to have. Sometimes we simply need a smack of perspective. Or a break. We need to build back our harmony and fun, let go of all the negative associations that we have built and are clinging onto in our brains, and simply be grateful that we have these wonderful dogs to share our lives with. It is up to us to decide what we would like to focus on – be it past failures and flaws or strengths and future successes! Dont get stuck in negative thought patterns that will harm both your future success and your relationship with your dog. Focus your beliefs on all of their positive traits, so that they can become that again. Monique Anstee Victoria, BC
