Who can name 5 types of barrow? Within the Stonehenge landscape the most numerous and spectacular prehistoric monuments are the great groups of round barrows. These are Bronze Age burial mounds of a wide variety of shapes and sizes. The earliest date from about 2300BC, the time after Stonehenge had been rebuilt in stone. These barrows continued to be modified and new ones built until 1500BC. Many of the barrows that surround Stonehenge are on National Trust Stonehenge Landscape open access land. Some of the rich finds from the Stonehenge landscape can be seen in the Stonehenge exhibition and visitor centre and many more are in display in the Wiltshire Museum and the The Salisbury Museum. You can explore the Stonehenge landscape on the English Heritage website ow.ly/By7zn.
