Who doesnt like projects that teach? Most people buy a lot of expensive batteries and lots of pricey solar panels to work off the grid and are called green. But what if there was another way, like the “joule thief” project? This project is a must for people trying to squeeze as much current out of a small battery/solar array as possible, hence cheaper costs and less of a carbon footprint and a true green setup. Other than that most hams probably have the components in their junk pile and the will to build something and learn from it in the processes. I found this video that explains the circuit and one of the best explanations of how and why it works. There are several videos on you-tube that have applications that most hams would enjoy. So if you are looking for something to do when the snow flys you may build a joule thief and experiment.
