Who knew that it would take 3 hours each way to drive from NYC to New Haven (on 95 because they wont let our ancient banged-up but cheap rental van on the lovely Merrit or indeed any Parkway) to pick up this gorgeous old Eastlake bed I found on Craigslist? The man selling it found it in a barn when he was 17, down to silvery dry wood. A friend told him all he had to do was patiently scrape it all with a piece of glass to get the yuck off and the grain up . . . and with a 17-hr-olds patience for a project, he did. Delia Sherman & I have long wanted a headboard for our bedroom, and now weve found the perfect one - with the help of our nephew AJ Kushner, who drove the scary van all the way through the city and back & forth on 95 - with a side trip to the Sherwood Diner, whose parking lot was the scariest place of all! Thank you to the sun, moon & stars who set this one up for all of us. Sometimes, they align.
