Who knew that reading an personal memoir article on the NYT would result in my having an email conversation on evolution with a NC State Computer Science prof who is agnostic/atheist?! He admitted as much that evolution can account for human intelligence but cannot account for reason or consciousness. We’ve had an interesting conversation. Evolution cannot and has not accounted for human OR animal consciousness. And then a teacher at Jack’s HS passed along to me a 2014 paper from MIT where the argument is that consciousness is perhaps matter. Matter? How can perception of reality be matter? It was a lot of physics and mathematical equations to finally say---we propose a hypothesis of consciousness as matter BUT we have not attempted to solve this problem. My question—if Christians and religious people should know why they believe something how can atheists cop to: consciousness doesn’t exist (Dennett, Dawkins) or it’s not knowable/mystery (NC State prof) or we can’t solve this problem empirically but we will try to prove it’s matter but we can’t (MIT). Fascinating stuff!
