Who knows what situation, person, or place will tug at the heartstrings, evoking a deep sense of belonging? Since returning to the US of A 2 months ago, I have visited familiar places where significant events occurred in my past (such as Teaism where Kelly and I went on our first date), but nothing seemed to grab me. I even stopped in a familiar watering hole, The Black Rooster, where I spent many a congenial evening throwing darts, hanging out with friends, and worshipping Bacchus. I was expected some emotional reaction, some sense of “aaahh”, but nope, nada. Then, the day after we moved into Kelly’s apartment, I headed over to the Soviet Safeway on 17th Street. So named because for many years – before the Whole Foods on P Street between 14th and 15th forced it to spruce up its act – it was a rather dingy affair that would often have bare shelves. Whatever the nomenclature, when I walked into this rather drab supermarket, I had a very intense sense of connection, a feeling that I was finally back. Go figure. A supermarket? Whatever the case, it’s good to be back in one of the places I call “home.”
