Who remembers this song? It was based on an 18th century hymn by English clergyman Phillip Doddridge, re-arranged by Edwin Hawkins and recorded in 1967 and topped out at #4 on the US top 40 and #2 on the UK and Ireland singles charts two years after it was recorded. In the proces, it earned the group a Grammy in 1970, helped establish Contemporary Gospel as a recognized music style and was included in the RIAA songs of the century list, along with such notable songs as Bing Crosbys iconic White Christmas and Bill Haleys Rock Around the Clock. The song inspired George Harrison to write his 1970 hit, My Sweet Lord and has appeared in several movies over the years. For all its influence, Oh Happy Day doesnt get the airplay today that it once did in the 70s, even on oldies stations. Its unapologetic Christ centered message came at a time when hippies were turning to Jesus for inner peace and love. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_movement So enjoy this stirring oldie: Edwin Hawkins Singers 1967 recording of Oh Happy Day. youtu.be/EfGDvDGE7zk
