Who said a bunch of folk writing for our lives wont help to shift the conversation? Thanks to all of you who joined the co-authors of the open letter, Edgar Rivera Colon, Opal Ayo, and me, as signatories. Looks like we were heard after all. In the midst of the noisy back-and-forth between Mayor de Blasio and the police unions, some voices have been conspicuously absent — the voices of the leaders from the fraternal and advocacy organizations representing black and Latino officers. But leaders of six of those organizations tell WNYC they have their own concerns about the mayor and are feeling left out of the conversation about police reform. An open letter published by Ebony magazine earlier this month, signed by 135 writers, activists, educators and other community members, called on organizations such as the Guardians, which represents African Americans in law enforcement, and the Hispanic Society to be more vocal in what has become as much a debate over police reform as it is over race. #BlackLivesMatter
