Who saw this on the news? And what are your thoughts? 7. Oregon will soon be the first state in the nation to charge you by the mile for maintaining the state roads. Oregon Department of Transportation is moving ahead with the road use fee to replace the gasoline tax. They say this is because cars are getting more fuel-efficient and gas tax revenue is going down. That means the state is looking at better ways to pay for maintaining the roads. You pay 30 cents a gallon in gas taxes every time you fill up. It adds up to hundreds of millions of dollars. But ODOT says it is not enough to fix and maintain all of the roads. They ran two pilot programs with electronic devices attached to cars to calculate how many miles you drive. You would get a bill at the end of the month and then a refund of the gas tax. The fee will be 1.5 cents per mile. ODOT will roll this plan out July 1 with 5,000 volunteer participants. They will see how it works and then the legislature will decide when it will be expanded to the rest of us. Many other states will be watching Oregon to see if the plan works. The decline in gas tax revenue is being felt all around the country as more cars become more fuel efficient.
