Who should we blame New Zealand? Not the voters. Those swayed by good looks, the aura of money and plain speaking will vote how they vote. Politicians understand this. National undoubtedly suffered by it under Don Brash and now theyve found the goose that laid the golden egg with Key. The National front bench is packed with his clones. John Keys personal popularity is clearly something the labour party has needed to demolish for a long time, and this speaks to a bigger issue - labour has not been an effective opposition party this term or for that matter in previous two. Turia is right when she says that the greens led the opposition. But thats not a good thing. Middle New Zealand is afraid of a government dominated by the greens (rightly or wrongly). This leads me to my third and final point - the fragmentation and infighting on the left. National already had a stable coalition going into the electron (despite having devoured them amoeba like, in the process, good-bye Act, farewell untied future, get well soon Maori party). Labour refused the Greens offer to work together in unseating King Key. This was a mistake. They treated the greens the same as they did internet mana and TPOW (the party of Winston) - holding them close with one hand and pushing them away with the other. The left would have profited by isolating Winston and Mana. Publicly outing them for the poison pill they are.. No shady allegations of conspiracy please). That at least would have showed direction.
