Who wouldve thought that breaking a few coconuts would go a long - TopicsExpress

Who wouldve thought that breaking a few coconuts would go a long way toward teaching students to always protect their heads when riding a bicycle? The tropical fruit was just one of the visual props that University of Colorado Hospital Dr. Bruce Evans and his team, the Helmet Heads, used recently during a 90-minute interactive workshop for second-graders at Fletcher Community School on the importance of wearing helmets. Students split up into three groups and simultaneously watched different helmet safety presentations, including the coconut display, where students dropped a 5-pound weight down a tube onto a coconut. In most cases, the fruit broke open as students watched in awe. They then placed a helmet over another coconut and repeated the simulation, witnessing how the protection can make a difference. In addition to Fletcher, Evans and the Helmet Heads visited several other Title I schools in APS, including Crawford, Montview and Paris elementary schools.
