Whoa. I just came back from a Lebanese heaven! Made a trip to CP after ages today and believe you me, it was a jolly good idea! Tucked amidst the hustle bustle of CP outer circle, Zizo is sure gods gift sent for us in the form of some real authentic Lebanese food. I’ll take a moment to clarify this, all the shawarmas and hummus and not to forget ‘Arbain nights’ (those donner kebab pop-ups in various commercial markets) trips now seem pointless and misleading. Well, Delhi never really had an authentic and organic Lebanese joint. It’s true. Zizo not only comes as a saving grace for Lebanese cuisine in the capital but also exposes us to some homegrown herbs, masalas and not to forget those rich and flavorful green olives (never had better olives, swooned!). The ambiance and décor reflects pure love. Every corner of the restaurant is brimming of color, passion, love for art and a certain Mediterranean sensibility. Owned by a Lebanese gentleman, this joint boasts of authentic and organic food. From the imported Za’atar masala, which forms the basis of many Lebanese dishes to the ‘Zejd’ olive oil used in all their dishes, the fragrance of these ingredients simply transported us back to their homeland. We started our meal with but of course, the hummus and pita! This was no regular hummus and pita. The bread was soft and fresh as hell. The organic tahini (sesame paste) here also comes all the way from Lebanon to maintain the authenticity. The others on the table included: Fattoush Salad, Man’Oushe, Falafel and Mulberry Juice. The Fattoush salad was absolutely fresh and doused in some homemade pomegranate molasses. The man’Oushe is a traditional Lebanese breakfast (flatbread) delicacy. The classic man’Oushe is oven fresh with the organic herb topping of za’atar + thyme + olive oil. The goodness of fresh herbs and olive oil made this one a winner. The falafel with the salad was crunchy and had the surprise element of fava beans in it (yes, real falafel is NOT all chickpeas, but fava beans too!). The mulberry juice was a tad bit sweet with added preservatives. The desserts: Baspousa (sweet semolina cake) and the Chocolate and banana man’ouche did help us end our meal at the sweetest note. Is it time to say yes to the likes of ‘Arabian nights?’ Yes please!
